VALERIE CAPERS - PORTRAIT IN SOUL

Valerie Capers for Atlantic from 1966.
Valerie Capers - Piano;Vincent McEwan - Trumpet;Robin Kenyatta - Alto Sax;Frank Perowsky - Tenor Sax;John Daley Bass;Charlie Hawkins - Drums;Richard Landrum - Latin Percussion

First time out in blogland for this terrific obscurity from the blind pianist who has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Ray Brown, Paquito D'Rivera, Tito Puente but is still probably best known for her time with Mongo Santamaria.
Five self penned originals plus one standard which range in diverse styles from the rousing opener
of the Billy Taylor influenced "Little David Swing" to the modal "Odyssey" to the sublime latin serenity of " Subrosa" to the hip swingin' groover "Hey Stuff" and the rousing soul jazz sound of "Kenne's Soul".

All Killer No Filler.

Thanks for turning me on to this one, Bacoso.
I like the new look. I like the mediafire link even better :-)

Just dropping back in to say indeed this is All Killer No Filler. Odyssey is the cut for me, but I that opening track really does swing too.
It's a shame she's so little known — and still performing it seems.
Again thanks for a great share Bacoso

Hiya Bacoso,

Just wanted to pop in and congratulate you for your top jazz blog award.

They finally acknowledged what thousands of us have known for a long while.

Cheers and thanks, brother man.

Dear Bacoso (What does the name mean? I know it does not mean "O Chimp wearing a tux" ;-) :-D... Tee Hee Oops sorry!),

First of all BIG THANKS!! *bow*.
You truly are virtuoso! I am learning Jazz by stumbling upon your site. I picked up my Jazz tastes from me dad and from the OST tracks he used to listen to (tapes and cassettes mostly).

Now I know there's some veritable treasures on LP...
And thanks to you I can get it too... The prices of some of these things are waaaaaaaaaay out of my reach. That includes buying a Rapidshare account for even a month...

And for providing a (non-rapidshare) Mediashare link I thank you once more.... Mwwaaaah (Chimp Kiss from me ;-))!

Thanks guv, you are a star!

I suggest we launch some sort of Bacoso awards for the best post(s) of the year here at OIR. Let's say Impressed number 1 and Mal Waldron's Spanish Bitch 2...

Nice drop. In the trivia dept, tenorist Frank Perowsky is drummer Ben Perowsky's dad. But maybe someone mentioned that already....
