All killer modal to bossa to blues business from this terrific super rarity recorded during Mr. Gregory's long sojourn in Scandinavia supported by a veritable who's who of then emerging Danish talent.
I've ripped it from the oop Japanese cd reissue but used the original lp format for this post. I couldn't stretch to the wallet pounding price of an original lp!

This album, cut live in Copenhagen in '63, is a rolling joy. Led in by Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson's walking bass, and the twin-drum kits of Alex Riel and Bjarne Rostovold, opening track, 4070 Blues, comes on like some pastoral theme tune from the wildest ever '70s kids' TV show, Shihab's urgent, rough-house flute wigging out and digging in as the rhythm section keep it moving ever forward, like some carnival of woodland animals hopped up on mushrooms and licorice root. Shihab's clenched, cautious introduction to Charade - "The title... song... from... the Stanley. Donen. Pro. Duction. A UNI! Versal release... titled 'Sharard' or 'Sha-raid'..." - suggest that he may not have been completely sober during the recording, but his playing, as soloist and bandleader is totally in control, pulling the band on a twisting, mystical ride that conjures up images of Cary Grant's Euro playboy world wrenched at the seams by free psychedelic revolution.

Thanks for this excellent post that reflects the excitement of hearing Shahib Shihab live. He came often to Brussels but I was a bit too young at the time to be allowed into jazz clubs (and didn't have much money either ... although the late Pol from the famous Pol's Jazz Club was always keen on seeing youth showing interest in jazz and there would be an occasional free beer as an encouragement).

don - you are correct however the black lion release was licenced to Japan where it was reissued with the original cover art plus the bonus tracks as well.As I wrote in my blurb I have ripped the cd to match the original vinyl format. Funnily enough the Japanese issue uses the original cover art and is packaged in a fascimile mini lp sleeve yet when you get the cd out its marked Black Lion!!!

Chazzy here.You Sexy MF it's been while.IMHO this is one of those Lp's I would keep and start robbing old ladies instead if I needed the dough rather than sell.Wish I had and orig of this.Swanso is great for putting this and Aravanitas "Soul Jazz" out.Glad to be back.
