A truly fabulous Big Band album of spiritual jazz from Detroit with a thirty plus member line up featuring Tribe and Strata East stalwarts such as Phil Ranelin,Miller Brisker and Nasir Hafiz plus guest vocalist Kim Weston of Motown fame.

The Hastings Street Jazz Experience was founded in 1972 by musicians Ed Nelson,Dedrick Glover and Charles Miles.Miller Brisker and Ed Nelson,who is percussionist on on all of the compositions,have to be seen as the driving force both musically and from a production standpoint.The musicians on this date all agree that without their energy and persistence the album would never have been finished.Miller Brisker,whose solo on Ja -Mil firmly demonstrates his lyricism and his ability to swing,is also the founder of the Detroit Jazz Composers Ltd which is responsible for all the compositions rendered here.It is especially rewarding to hear Teddy Harris Jnr,Nasir Hafiz and and Herbie Williams.

For those of you who did not know about Hastings Street, here's a little history lesson from a native Detroiter who reads as much Detroit history as there is to read...
Hastings Street was the heart of black Detroit. There were black-owned businesses, nightlife... It was black Detroit in a time when a black man would get trouble from the cops walking just a few blocks away and crossing Woodward Avenue.
So where is it now?
Look on a map and follow the peculiar path of I-75. There is an unneeded extension called I-375. The powers that be obliterated Hastings Street from the map. You can decide for yourself what the reasoning behind this was.

There is still one block of Hastings left! Also, we cannot fail to tell folks it was the home of Henry's Swing Club. The house act was some cat named John Lee Hooker during the time he was cutting all those killer sides for Vee Jay.

Very good album indeed but i was expecting something a bit more "adventurous".
We've been spoilt so much with all the great music on this blog, I feel like a kid in a candy store.
20 years ago, when vinyl went out of fashion (I always kept mine though, i thought that a lot of that music would never been re-issued or be available again. I was wrong. But what's amazing is that the music is saved not by the industry (no interest in non-commercial music anymore) but by small re-issue companies and by people like you, thru' their blog. Making rare records available to a large audience is the best way to ensure that the music will survive.whatever happen.

I was going to make a guess at jtf's name, but then I checked my sources. For those interested in a great book about the heyday of jazz in Detroit, check the book by Lars Bjorn & Jim Gallert: Before Motown: A History of Jazz in Detroit, 1920-60 (University of Michigan Press, 2001). I thought it might have been Jim posting earlier.
I've met Lars, he also knows Herb Byd quite well.
