ELVIN JONES . MASABUMI KIKUCHI - HOLLOW OUT

Masabumi Kikuchi for Philips Japan from 1972.
Masabumi Kikuchi -Piano 、Gene Perla-Bass、Elvin Jones-Drums.
Engineered by Rudy Van Gelder.

Another first in blogland here at Orgy In Rhythm with this very rare trio outing from Masabumi Kikuchi and Elvin Jones.
This has been something of a holy grail for me having chased after it for years and never managing to secure a copy. Now thanks to an expensive cross cultural exchange it now sits in my collection at home.
At the time of recording Kikuchi was pianist for the Elvin Jones Group which also featured Gene Perla on bass and the three took the time out from touring to record this at Van Gelder Studios New Jersey .
I know little else about this album so better to leave the wonderful music to speak for itself.
Ripped @320 from the 1996 Japanese cd reissue.
My thanks to Jazz-neko for his efforts in sourcing this cd for me-cheers,my friend.

Wow. I never even heard of this. I'm a huge Elvin fan, so thanks a ton.

"sublime" does not even begin to do this set justice -
keep on describing! or ask someone from AMG to give it a go (nah, don't do that!)

let me add before i forget that the mighty pooh-sun, although silver haired now, recalls that jones specifically wanted to recorded with kikuchi because of his thorough knowledge and capabilities with "sheets of sound". jones sought him out just for that and in respect for 'trane's legacy. . .

cross cultural exchange? yes, it is always a good thing. more people ought to try opening their minds to the possibilities; i have, and find my world expaning beyond my wildest dreams,

cheers bacoso

a few of the visitors here have asked about invites to El Reza:
El Reza has told me that although his blog page now indicates he's gone private this is not he case. The blog is now closed and not open to anyone at all. However by utilising this feature of blogger he's able to retain his original blog rather than deleting it all.Nobody has access to it apart from Reza so don't feel you have been left out!!!

Thank you very much! Rare record. Could you please tell me the correct track sequence? The download has all tracks only in alphabetical order.

bacoso said...

glmlr-view the track listing by number in your media player. The tracks were correctly sequenced in the upload:
APPLE/GINKAI/LITTLE ABI/BELL/HOLLOW OUT

Does anyone in cyberspace land have a copy of a japanese disc by jazz drummer Al Foster simply called "Mr Foster"-it's a killer and i have been chasing it for years.

tasty

Bacoso: Thanks! If one does the download, and if the tracks are not numbered in sequence, then a software program such as Nero (which I use for burning CDR's) will simply read the tracks in alphabetical order, not in the order in which they appear on the original. That was the reason for my question.

Jazz-Nekko:

Jazz in Japan on 1st February?

Miles - "Agharta / Pangaea" - 1975.

Barre Phillips / Haino Keiji - "Etchings in The Air" - 1996.

Thanks dear friends Bacoso and JN for another musical treasure.

Many thanks for posting this. Never heard of this one. Big fan of Elvin Jones '70's records and all Kikuchi's stuff. Gene Perla is great on this also.

colinb-you must be talking about Al Foster's Mr Foster lp on Better Days Japan from 1979.I bought it on release on the strength of the cracking fusion tune "Whatsoever"but the rest of the lp was shite so it soon made the used bin in Record & Tape Exchange.Id like to hear Whatsoever again but probably not the rest of it!

glmlr:

two excellent choices, but as you know both of these (Miles - "Agharta / Pangaea" - 1975; Barre Phillips / Haino Keiji - "Etchings in The Air" - 1996) have been well shared here in blog-o-sphere. . .

oh-no, i just realised that i am pitting my opinion against that of the mighty and knowledgeable glmr. . .i sure hope i do not disappoint you, my friend.

no! i do not think i will - i will take the confidence road!

Jazz Nekko_

Of course, you do not disappoint. Those recordings I mentioned happened to have been made in your country on that date, 1st February. I thought that was what you were asking us, I was not suggesting you post them. I look forward to learning what does actually happen on your 1st February!

Regarding Al Foster I have never heard the Mr Foster album, but his album Mixed Roots which I think is of similar vintage is great, with Paul Metzke on guitar & Masabumi Kikuchi!

hey bacoso,
what a fantastic addition to your collection man!
MANY THANKS FOR SHARING THIS GEM WITH US ALL-REALLY APPRECIATED!!!

bacoso said...

dka-mr foster wa a stinker of an lp (apart from the afore mentioned "whatsoever")which was aimed at the pop/disco market with a dire cover of "hes the greatest dancer"-the rest of it was even worse.

knew his cds with P Motian, with T Hino, Susto but that didn't prepare me for this. Amazing, greatly appreciated, gentlemen.
