Billy Wooten and Special Friends for APS from 1979.
Wonderful piece of super rare soulful jazz from Billy Wooten to kick off a freestyling 2008 here at Orgy In Rhythm.
Two files-here and here.
Dusty Groove :
One of the most soul-based records ever cut by vibist Billy Wooten -- a record that's even tighter and more focused than his work with The Wooden Glass or 19th Whole! The album's got Billy and other vocalists singing along with his vibes and marimba -- over the top of tightly vamping rhythms by the combo, served up with a breezy, jazzy approach that's totally great. There's plenty of warm changes in the rhythms -- almost in the style of Bobby Hutcherson's work of the same time, but a fair bit more varied overall as well -- thanks to some unusual material included by Wooten in the set. Vocals are by Wooten, Joy Smith, and Funda Cooper -- and other instrumentation includes alto sax, flute, guitar, bass, drums, and plenty of percussion

Nice post. "The Wooden Glass" is far superior to this one. Billy is a local here. Steven Weakly is too. I use give him rides home in the cab after his regular Wednesday night sets over at the Chatterbox. Great dude, tones of stories!
I posted this about a year ago at Curved-Air.com. Nice to see it pop up again.
Best,
